In this scene of American Psycho, the main character Patrick Bateman is trying to break up with his girlfriend Evelyn. At the start of the scene we see a close up of Patrick drawing on the table cloth, while the camera slowly pans to the left, showing that he's barely touched his dessert. In terms of editing, the scene is made up of mostly eye-line match shots between Patrick and Evelyn, with cuts made back and forth once they finish their lines. Starting at 0:12 we are shown a two shot of Patrick and Evelyn, so that we can see where exactly Evelyn is gesturing towards. Specifically at 1:04 a cut is made to show the action of Patrick grabbing and putting down Evelyn's arm in a smooth motion. Starting from 1:12, we have the longest shot of Evelyn in the whole scene, and the only time Patrick says anything without the camera on him. This might have been down in order to show the emotion on Evelyns face as she realizes Patrick really does want to end their relationship. At 1:36 we get the widest shot of the scene, in order to show the reaction of everyone in the restaurant due to Evelyn's crying. At 1:50 Patrick makes a sudden move toward Evelyn, forcing the camera to make a quick adjustment down. Finally at the end of the scene, we see Patrick get up and start to walk away from the table. At 2:04 we can see that where Evelyn's eyes are looking is exactly where Patrick is in the next shot.
